After Taiwan was granted permission to construct a de facto embassy in Vilnius/Lithuania, tensions between China and Lithuania rose.
China considers Taiwan to be part of its own territory, and it is exerting enormous pressure on other countries to avoid dealing directly with the Taipei government.
Beijing has used economic pressure on Lithuanian politicians to persuade them to change their minds about allowing Taiwan to open a representative office in Vilnius.
Taiwan now wants to help pay for the financial costs of enraging Beijing and announced on Wednesday that it will establish a $200 million (€176 million) investment fund in Lithuania.
Taiwan hopes that by introducing the new investment fund, it will relieve some of the strain on Lithuania.
Lithuanian business organizations have complained that their items are no longer being imported into China and that Lithuania is no longer registered in China’s customs system.
Taiwan will now buy Lithuanian items that had been blocked.
