Of the world’s top ten chip design companies, six are from the United States and four are now from Taiwan.
MediaTek of Taiwan is ranked 4th, while its compatriots Novatek Microelectronics is 6th, Realtek Semiconductor is 8th, and Himax Technologies is 10th.
MediaTek has even taken the lead in the important smartphone chip market.
Taiwanese chip designers’ rapid rise can be attributed in part to their proximity to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract chipmaker, and third-ranked United Microelectronics Corp.
Taiwan’s growing role in chip design extends to players based in the United States as well.
For example Taiwanese-born executives lead Nvidia, AMD, and Xilinx, which are ranked second, fifth, and nint. All three rely heavily on TSMC.
Overall, seven of the top ten fabless chip companies have Taiwanese leaders.
Their ties to the island will be useful in future industry mergers and acquisitions.
