Taiwan is preparing for potential cyberattacks from China, according to a statement from a White House official.

Taiwan’s political and military leadership is fully engaged in readiness for a cyber conflict with Beijing, and the United States is prepared to support their network defenses, according to a senior White House official speaking at the POLITICO Tech Summit on Wednesday.

Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, highlighted the commitment of Taiwan’s leadership, including President Tsai Ing-wen, to enhance the island’s cybersecurity and digital resilience. Neuberger emphasized that Taiwan is acutely aware of China’s formidable cyber capabilities, particularly in the realms of cyberattacks and espionage. The situation is expected to escalate further with Taiwan gearing up for a presidential election in January.

To offer timely assistance to Taiwan in the event of a significant cyber assault, Neuberger explained that the U.S. would deploy its top cybersecurity teams to help track down the attackers. This mirrors the standard approach used to support international allies in the realm of cyberspace, aiming to identify ongoing intrusions and reinforce network security.

Furthermore, Neuberger noted that the U.S. and Taiwan are closely collaborating through military exercises and simulations to prepare for potential devastating cyberattacks. The growing concern for Washington and its allies is the escalating conflict in Taiwan, encompassing both cyber and physical dimensions, despite China’s repeated warnings against U.S. involvement.
