Siliconware Precision Industries Co Ltd (SPIL), a semiconductor packaging and testing company with approximately 23,000 employees, has commenced the construction of its $1.4 billion P1 plant on an eight-hectare site in Bandar Cassia Technology Park, Penang and not in China!
According to a joint statement issued by SPIL, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), and InvestPenang, the new plant is anticipated to generate nearly 3,000 skilled jobs. It will introduce advanced packaging and testing technologies like wafer bumping, offering a comprehensive turnkey solution over the next 15 years.
The initiative aims to significantly reduce production cycles, thereby enhancing efficiency and competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.
Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, highlighted that SPIL’s $1.4 billion investment underscores Malaysia’s attractiveness to global semiconductor companies and its commitment to swiftly implementing investors’ commitments.
MIDA CEO Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid emphasized that SPIL’s investment will bring substantial benefits to Malaysia’s semiconductor industry, enhancing the country’s semiconductor ecosystem and creating high-value job opportunities.
SPIL Malaysia CEO Michael Chang expressed that the establishment of the P1 plant will drive innovation in Penang, establishing an advanced packaging and testing base, nurturing semiconductor talents, and enhancing technological capabilities.
