In May 2024, both New York and Louisiana passed resolutions showing their support for Taiwan and advocating for increased cooperation between the United States and Taiwan.
New York’s resolution, titled “Memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to Proclaim May 29, 2024, as Taiwan Heritage Day in the State of New York,” was adopted by both the New York State Assembly and Senate. The resolution emphasizes the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region, highlighting Taiwan’s vital role in maintaining regional peace. Additionally, it mentions various international forums where Taiwan’s significance has been recognized.
Meanwhile, the Louisiana State Senate unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 95, expressing support for strengthening the state’s partnership with Taiwan.
The US and Taiwan share a “robust trade and investment partnership,” which “provides a solid foundation for a mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement to spur job creation, further expand the global market and secure international supply chains,” the resolution says.
This resolution, which had previously passed the Louisiana House of Representatives without opposition, acknowledges Taiwan’s contributions to addressing global challenges such as humanitarian crises, nontraditional security threats, and pandemic prevention. It calls for enhancing the partnership with Taiwan, expanding its global role, and promoting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait through constructive dialogue. Furthermore, the resolution endorses a tax agreement between the US and Taiwan and advocates for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.
