An 18-year-old left-handed pitcher from Taiwan, Lin Wei-en, has inked a $1.35 million (NT$43.6 million) deal with the Oakland A’s on June 6th. Lin, a graduate of Ping Jen Senior High School in Taoyuan, becomes the ninth Taiwanese player to secure an MLB contract exceeding $1 million. His standout performance in the 2023 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup, where he pitched 13 scoreless innings with 14 strikeouts against Korea, Netherlands, and Japan, caught the attention of scouts.

Despite Taiwan finishing as runners-up to Japan in the tournament, Lin’s prowess on the mound was undeniable. Additionally, he showed his commitment to his roots by donating NT$484,482 to his former schools in Taoyuan.

Adam Hislop, the international baseball scout for the A’s, spoke highly of Lin’s talent during a press conference. Having scouted for 15 years, Hislop considers Lin one of the best pitchers he’s encountered. His initial impression of Lin dates back to 2017, when he observed Lin’s remarkable performance in a youth baseball tournament. Notably, Lin won both games he pitched, demonstrating exceptional endurance by throwing a total of 209 pitches in the semifinals and championship.

Hislop emphasized Lin’s ability to thrive under pressure, particularly evident in his performance at the 2023 WBSC U-18 tournament. He anticipates Lin receiving his visa within six weeks and commencing training in the U.S.
