Cisco has unveiled its Taiwan Digital Acceleration Plan 3.0, emphasizing a heightened focus on cybersecurity. As part of this initiative, the American networking equipment giant plans to establish a cybersecurity center in Taiwan, in collaboration with the Taiwanese government. This joint effort aims to bolster cybersecurity measures and enhance workforce training in the sector, according to reports from the media.

The move comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding cyber threats originating from China, which Taiwan, governed democratically but viewed by Beijing as part of its territory, has consistently highlighted, as reported by Reuters. These cyberattacks have targeted various Taiwanese entities, including governmental bodies, officials, and technology firms, reflecting broader geopolitical tensions.

Under the Taiwan Digital Acceleration Plan 3.0, Cisco intends to prioritize cybersecurity efforts and partner with the Taiwanese government to train individuals in cybersecurity skills. This initiative seeks to address the global shortage of talent in this critical field, as highlighted in the Reuters report.

Cisco’s global innovation officer, Guy Diedrich, emphasized the company’s commitment to significant advancements in security, including the establishment of a “security innovation center” in Taiwan. Although specific investment amounts were not disclosed, Diedrich mentioned that the digital acceleration program allows for ongoing investments without a predetermined limit.

Meanwhile, amidst accusations of involvement in hacking activities, China has consistently denied any such claims. Recent developments also saw Microsoft’s president addressing Congress, acknowledging security lapses that allowed hackers linked to China to breach federal government computer networks. Despite these challenges, Microsoft remains committed to addressing vulnerabilities in its products while continuing operations in China, as affirmed during testimony before the House Homeland Security Committee by Brad Smith.
