Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) – a Taiwanese company- is the world’s second-most valuable semiconductor company and the world’s largest dedicated independent (“pure-play”) semiconductor foundry.
On Wednesday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) announced that it had informed the U.S. government about the discovery of one of its chips in a Huawei product, potentially breaching U.S. export regulations.
Tech research firm TechInsights reportedly found a TSMC chip in Huawei’s Ascend 910B, which is the company’s most advanced artificial intelligence chip. Before releasing their findings in an upcoming report, TechInsights alerted TSMC.
In its statement, TSMC emphasized its commitment to adhering to all relevant rules and regulations, including export controls, and noted that it has not supplied Huawei since mid-September 2020.
The company said it had proactively reached out to the U.S. Commerce Department regarding “the matter in the report.”
“We are not aware of TSMC being the subject of any investigation at this time,” it said.
The U.S. added Huawei to a trade restriction list in 2019 due to national security concerns. As reported by Reuters, TSMC manufactured chips for the initial phases of Huawei’s Ascend 910 series prior to the implementation of U.S. export controls.
