Taiwan is emerging as a focal point for tech companies, with both NVIDIA and AMD gearing up to establish new R&D hubs in the country.

Major players in the tech industry, NVIDIA and AMD, are poised to make significant investments in Taiwan, aiming to accelerate advancements in AI and foster research and development.

Reports from Taiwanese media outlets like CTEE and Taiwan Economic Daily reveal NVIDIA and AMD’s intentions to bolster their presence in Taiwan by establishing new R&D centers.

NVIDIA, which already operates an R&D center in the Neihu District since 2022, focusing on AI, is now planning to construct a second AI-focused facility in Kaohsiung. Additionally, NVIDIA intends to collaborate with Foxconn on the “Taipei-1” supercomputer project in Kaohsiung, earmarking 25% of its capacity for academic and industrial use, promoting generative AI and large language models (LLMs) adoption.

Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government is providing support to AMD for the development of its own R&D center in the country, aiming to maintain a balanced partnership.

In AMD’s case, the company is reportedly allocating 5 billion yuan for its R&D center in Taiwan, considering locations such as Tainan and Kaohsiung. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, is scheduled to visit Taiwan soon, indicating potential involvement in other supply chain-related developments.

With its advanced semiconductor capabilities and supportive policies, Taiwan is becoming increasingly attractive for companies like AMD and NVIDIA to establish and expand their operations.
